Stop C4

Someone please stop Channel 4. It's all a little embarrassing and rather hard to watch.

This has blown out of all proportion. I watched some of it last night and had to stop. Jade Goody is on some mission of self destruction that maybe even the Impossible Mission Force could not accomplish. Brand Goody is toast. Really burnt toast at that. I guess if she knew the word irony she could lament "Big Brother made me and now its broken me".

I think just about every national newspaper has gone overboard with it as effergies are burnt and Gordon Brown ruing the day he decided to go to India when 'Big Brother' was on.

Clearly Channel 4 are not going to take this off the air. The ratings have surged, hitting 4.5m, but its taken a moral dive. Last night hit a new low, C4 needs to wake up. It keeps trying to weather this with the cultural clash when it is new clearly more than that. Goody needs to be taken out/voted out for her own/our sanity. Then we can quietly forget about the show again.

As early reports indicate that we're looking at a Jade v Shilpa eviction, the end is in sight. What I especially like about the press coverage is that most of the images used of Shilpa are tasteful, posed studio shots, while Jade's are stills taken mid-tirade, making her look ugly and undignified. The one thing that makes it worth watching is the total dismantling of Jade Goody. Now that Shilpa is attributing their comments to racism, I see that C4 have said that 'Shilpa has not complained directly to Big Brother' and so they do not feel they have to act or intervene. What a big, ugly, ratings hit.

I too tried watching it. Turned it off midway through. Awful, awful telly. A disgrace really. I don't think I'll be shopping at the Carphone Warehouse while they continue to sponsor this offensive crap.

"making her look ugly and undignified".

No, I think that's just how she looks.

I agree with Lost Boy, it's worth it just to see Jade Goody get the comeuppance she's deserved ever since she was first foisted on a willing public.

But I don't think Channel 4 should take it off, neither to I think it's fair to take it out on them or the programme's sponsors. Big Brother holds a mirror up to society, and that's exactly what we got here: the public exposure of the beliefs and behaviour of a certain type of brainless nonentity, one that's sadly quite common in our society.

Besides which, I think the issue here is not racism, but xenophobia. Jade's various tirades have nothing to do with Shulpa's race, and everything to do with her otherness. I'm certain that she would have a similar attitude towards anyone from a radically different social setting and with correspondingly different behaviour, whether that person came from the UK or further afield.

Anyway, the upshot of it all is that a large section of the British public have got to see somebody behaving in a very narrow-minded and bigoted way, and have seen how ridiculous and unappealing such behaviour makes that person look. Surely this is a good thing?
