Not much of a Rose

I've been hooked by the revamp of 'Doctor Who', the BBC has done a great job, but have always found Billie Piper completely annoying, so the news today that she is being killed off is great news.

Nothing against Piper apart from the fact she's a short podgy blonde with an over-sized mouth, a gormless grin and acting skills that pull the whole show down... oh wait I do have something against her.

It's not that I'm harking back to assistants from days gone by, but she was certainly put into the shade in the recent episode that featured the return of Sarah Jane Smith (played by Elizabeth Sladden). So did K9 for that matter and he's a rusty tin can. Or he was until he got blown up and rebuilt.

Although shockingly in a BBC poll, Piper seems to be pulling in the votes. Personally, I bet she's sitting on her laptop voting away like a member of George Bush's family on holiday in Florida.

If you're going to pick an assistant why not someone useful rather than an emotionally scarred overgrown teenager from a council estate. Some cool nuclear scientist or physicist or a Scully-like FBI agent. Piper's main qualities were looking bad in dungarees. Wait, that doesn't actually count as a quality.

Piper will go out in what the BBC says will be a nail-biting series two finale.

Back on Earth (yet again) the human race rejoices as the ghosts of loved ones return home. Apparently no one thinks this is odd.

But as the David Tennant's Doctor, Rose and her mother Jackie (Camille Coduri) investigate Torchwood Tower, a trap is being sprung -- an almighty invasion is being put into motion which is set to destroy the whole of modern-day Earth. Yikes.

Please Mr Russell T Davies, let’s have someone cool. Whoever gets the gig we'll know soon enough -- the third series of 'Doctor Who' starts filming again later this summer and returns to our screens with a Christmas special and another series of 13 episodes for 2007.

Update: Sadly no Rosamund Pike, but someone called Freema Agyeman to replace piper. Apparently she used to be in axed soap 'Cross Roads'. Not exactly quality, but hey she'll help the Doc take on the Cybermen again so not all bad.

This is all according to the Sun. Others linked to role were former 'Easter Ender' Michelle Ryan (Zoe).

God Gordon you're bonkers sometimes. Billie has been brilliant as Rose. You're just a middleclass snob who doesn't like to see a talented, albeit slightly common girl made good playing a working class kid. Okay she's no Emma Thompson, she's no Helena Bonham Carter but thank God!

She's been sexy in a slutty way and sometimes she's been quite funny. And she's been the perfect foil for the last two doctors.

Shame on you Gordon for your snobbery!

Sexy in a slutty way? No that would just be slutty. One or the other. Make your mind up.

May I be the first to suggest she be replaced with the delectable Rosamund Pike, former Bond girl and consumate professional? She's got an Oxbridge English degree and once referenced Roland Barthes in an interview about her favourite car. This is the sort of talent we need to see in Doctor Who.

She's not actually slept with anyone in the show has she?

Gordon she's really got something going for her.

I'm with 'do you expect me to talk goldfinder' though. We need Rosamund!

I haven't watched much of the new incarnation but when I have I think she's been 'OK'. I hope this doesn't mean the end of Rose's mum; she's great. Maybe we could have her as the new sidekick.

michelle ryan would bring a similar 'sexy in a slutty way' approach to the role. which is nice.

a bit of class would be good, get a fine fillie in. who's that gal chantelle? she'd be fiiiine.

NEW UPDATE:

I've just spoken to someone in central casting about the possibility of Patsy Kensit as the new assistant to the Doctor!

Maybe that's why she left the farm programme.

Look I don't want to be picky here - but... I use to work in BBC TVC as an editor... Take from me the new assistant HAS already been cast - or at least they have a darned good idea... because the technical schedule would absolutely DEMAND that the ending of the relevant episode in which Rose dies/regenerates/becomes melded with the Tardis (as in Andromeda!) or what-ever will have already been shot and edited. It takes weeks to do the special effects... the episode has to be tech-reviewed and booked in to Library reday for Tx... the sypher dub needs completing... take from me you just can't do theses sorts of things on the hop.

So the best guess is this was all in the pipeline for months and we have only just learned about it because only now have we got to the point in the series where the ending is starting to become obvious....

So please STOP all the posts about what a disaster this is for the series... trust me... RTD has it all planned and he knows where it is going. My guess is Rose will either be regenerated or absorbed into the Tardis as a side effect of her brush with the Vortex energy... either way we may lose Billie but not the character.

Rumours On Rose's Replacement!
18/06/2006, 15:43pm BST

Click pic to enlarge!

The above photo shows the Doctor with the girl who is rumoured to replace assistant Rose Tyler as his TARDIS companion.
Adeola, played by actress Freema Agyeman, will appear in the last two episodes of the current series, Army Of Ghosts and Doomsday.
She is rumoured to work for Torchwood and she will help the Doctor battle the Cybermen as Rose bows out of her time travelling adventures.
There has been no official word on who will be the new assistant. But reports in today's News Of The World state that Captain Jack, played by John Barrowman, will rejoin the Doctor as he struggles to come to terms with Rose's departure.
Filming of the new series starts later this summer.

What about Captain Jack? He'd be good in a bi curious way. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Tell you who'd be great as the Doctor's new assistant:

Vinnie Jones.

Think about it...he'd be good.

Captain Jack is making a brief pre Torchwood return according to Wikipedia.

Jack was originally reported as reappearing in the 2006 series, although not in the first block of episodes. According to Doctor Who Magazine #360, he will not be appearing at all in the 2006 series due to scheduling conflicts, although Barrowman has stated he will return for Series 3

That would make sense then if he was there for an episode where the new girl takes over.

Phew, thanks for clarifying Gordon!
